Philosophy for Psychotherapists
I will be co-facilitating a course from September to December of 2025 entitled “Philosophy for Psychotherapists”. The course is designed as a 12-week introduction to the major texts, thinkers, and movements in the Western Philosophical tradition, from Ancient Greece to the present. The intention of the course is to encourage clinicians to apply core concepts in the philosophical canon to their clinical work, while gaining a deeper appreciation of the intellectual history underpinning contemporary thought and practice. Each section will give an overview of a particular tradition or set of thinkers, covering historical context, their philosophical contributions, and clinical application of their ideas. We will do our best to condense primary sources to approachable lengths, with weekly sections primarily consisting of a lecture by one of the facilitators on that week's topic, a group discussion, and structured ways to encourage participants to practice applying relevant concepts to their own cases.
The course will be taught in collaboration with John Maier, PhD, LICSW (www.johnmaier.com). The course has been approved for 18 CEUs for LMHCs and is still waiting NASW-MA approval. The anticipated time for the course is Wednesday evenings from 7:00-8:30 PM EST via Zoom. If this feels like a offering you would be interested in, please reach out to me here.
